Bill Pullman Lets Lewis Pullman Carve His Own Path

bill pullman is shaping Lewis Pullman’s career by staying in his corner without trying to direct every move. At the Remarkably Bright Creatures premiere in Los Angeles on April 30, the 33-year-old said his father gives advice but leaves room for him to choose his own path.

"He’s very much in my corner and gives a lot of career advice," Lewis told Will Marfuggi. He added, "but he’s not a father that’s like, ‘Do it this way, do it that way.’" That setup is the real story here: one actor with a long résumé is helping another navigate a higher-profile run without flattening the younger Pullman’s choices.

"He definitely allows me to carve my own path," Lewis said, "and make my own mistakes and learn from them—and I think that’s helped me a lot in so many ways." For a rising actor, that means the guidance is practical rather than prescriptive, which can matter more than a polished career sermon. It also shows how a family name can open doors without locking the person inside a preset image.

Lewis is building that path in public now. He stars in Remarkably Bright Creatures alongside Sally Field, and the premiere gave him a chance to talk about a film that puts him in close creative contact with one of Hollywood’s most durable screen actors.

Sally Field and the Set

Lewis said working with Field was "freeing and very exciting." He also said, "I think every scene brought something new and something surprising" and described her as "so exhilarating to work with because she’s so in tune with the moment and with her instincts." He added that because "She knew the character so, so well and the story so well so basically my job was just to react and be there with her and that was very freeing and very exciting."

That pairing has a family echo. Bill Pullman worked with Field in the 2019 National Theatre Live production of All My Sons, and Lewis said he saw his father in that production but did not meet Field then. He called it "beautiful and challenging to see your family in a role like that," and said, "It’s a heartbreaking story and I didn’t go back and say to Sally afterward because I was so kind of paralyzed from that experience." He added, "It affected me so much."

May 8 Release Date

Remarkably Bright Creatures is scheduled to be out on May 8, giving Lewis Pullman’s remarks a near-term commercial frame rather than a vague promotional one. For audiences, the immediate takeaway is that his on-screen work is being paired with a clear off-screen identity: advice from Bill Pullman, but no cookie-cutter career script.
