Kevin Durant Trade Rumors Rockets: Bailey Floats Braun, Johnson, Pick Swap
Kevin Durant trade rumors Rockets surfaced in a specific proposal on Saturday, when Andy Bailey laid out a deal that would send Durant to the Nuggets for Christian Braun, Cameron Johnson, and a 2031 first-round pick swap. Houston’s first season with Durant produced strong numbers from the forward, but the team still exited in the first round.
Bailey’s Denver proposal
Bailey wrote that the Rockets should try to land a Denver Nuggets NBA champion guard if Durant is shopped, then identified Braun as the central piece in the return. He also included Johnson and the 2031 pick swap, building a package that mixes immediate rotation help with a future asset.
“For the Rockets, it'll be tough to get many teams to surrender real draft assets for a soon-to-be-38-year-old who's struggled to fit in on four different teams now, but the Nuggets may be desperate enough to do just that,” Bailey wrote. He added that by the time the swap conveys, Durant will likely be retired and Nikola Jokic will be 36, which could make the pick swap valuable down the line.
Durant’s Houston numbers
Durant joined the Rockets in the summer via a blockbuster trade and delivered 26.0 points per game in his first season in Houston. He also shot 52.0% from the field and 41.3% from three, a line that shows he still produced at a high level even though the team’s season ended early.
The Los Angeles Lakers eliminated Houston in the first round of the postseason, leaving the Rockets to weigh whether to keep building around Durant or shop him again. Bailey’s proposal leans toward a reset that brings back two wings and a distant draft asset instead of another star scorer.
Braun’s deal and fit
Braun’s side of the proposal carries its own cost. He signed a five-year, $125 million contract, averaged 12.0 points per game in 44 regular-season contests, shot 51.9% from the field and 30.1% from three, and was one of the league’s most dangerous transition weapons in 2024-25.
Bailey wrote that Braun’s contract looks onerous after his down year, but he is still 25 years old and has already won a championship. Houston may explore the concept this summer, and the decision point is simple: keep Durant after a productive but unfinished first year, or turn that production into younger wings and a 2031 pick swap.
