Elliott Yamin Returns for 20th Anniversary Episode on American Idol.com

Elliott Yamin returns to american idol.com on the May 4 episode of American Idol, joining a 20th-anniversary reunion built around Season 5. The broadcast will bring back five contestants from the 2006 season, with Taylor Hicks, Kellie Pickler, Paris Bennett and Bucky Covington also set to appear.

Yamin finished third in Season 5 behind runner-up Katharine McPhee and winner Taylor Hicks, and he later turned that TV exposure into a solo career. His single Wait for You reached No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, and he has continued recording, with his most recent solo album arriving in 2015.

Yamin’s music after Idol

Yamin is currently providing vocals for the Lao Tizer Band, which plays jazz-style music and often performs live shows. Steve Tizer said, “This project was a little outside his stylistic wheelhouse because it is a bit more adventurous harmonically.” He added, “I think he was a little intimidated by the music early on but he’s such a remarkably gifted singer and he’s just singing his butt off.”

Tizer also said, “He’s turned out to be unbelievable in this project and the band.” He added, “He’s super gung-ho about it too, which is great. I couldn’t have asked for a better fit.” The reunion episode lands while Yamin is still active in music, not just revisiting a past TV run.

Behind the Season 5 return

Season 5 aired in 2006, which gives the May 4 appearance a clean anniversary frame rather than a routine nostalgia slot. For viewers who tracked that run the first time, the draw is a one-night return of the season’s most visible names, including the winner, the runner-up and three other finalists.

Yamin’s story also carries two personal facts that shaped his post-Idol profile: he is 90% deaf in his right ear, from severe childhood ear infections, and he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 16 years old after feeling “very lethargic and super dehydrated.” He said, “I was in denial,” and added, “I didn’t understand how I could just go from one day being a healthy kid to all of a sudden having to cope with such a meticulous, incurable disease. The road for me was very tough at first.”

Camilla and Karen Cruz

Yamin also has a daughter, Camilla, who was born on February 2, 2020, with Karen Cruz. In 2023, Cruz wrote on Instagram, “Thank you for being such a loving and present Dad to our CC. From changing exploding diapers to teaching her how to sing, count, play with other kids at the park…( and getting her to love vegetables somehow…) there is nothing you wouldn’t do for her and we love you for it!!”

Yamin replied in 2023 with a Mother’s Day message to Cruz: “Beautiful. Strong. Caring. Selfless. Thoughtful. Funny. Smart. Stylish. That’s Karen Cruz in a nutshell,” followed by, “Nana Claudette would be so proud. I know I am! Thank you @karencruzcontrol for showing our CC boundless love! We’re grateful for you not only today, but everyday! Happy Mother’s Day!”
