Alexi Hawley Rules Out Richard T. Jones Exit for The Rookie Season 9

Alexi Hawley says the rookie season 9 will stay “status quo,” and there is no plan for Richard T. Jones to leave before it begins. For viewers, that keeps Grey in place as the show moves out of a finale that left his job and the ensemble in motion.

Grey stays in the mix

“No, we’re status quo. We like everybody, we’re making it work,” Hawley said when asked whether Jones or another series regular is leaving. He added, “Richard is a hugely important piece of the puzzle of our show.” That closes the most immediate cast-exit speculation around Grey, who spent Season 8 working for Garza’s task force before the finale pushed him toward a crossroads.

Hawley also said, “I do think part of early writers room for Season 9 is going to be figuring out exactly what Grey’s next chapter is.” That puts Grey’s future at the center of the show’s earliest Season 9 planning, even as the character stays put on the roster. The practical takeaway is simple: the series is not using the new season to clear room by pushing Grey out.

Task force loses Monica

“The task force is all but over,” Hawley said, explaining that it was built around Monica and served as a Blacklist homage. Once Monica is gone, he said, the unit has “no center.” That leaves the writers with a structural problem, not just a character one, because Grey’s next move has to work without the job assignment that defined part of Season 8.

Hawley said, “I am always looking for a fresh way, I don’t think going backwards is necessarily the way to go, but I also want it to be satisfying and dramatic,” then added, “So one of the first things we got to figure out is what are we going to do with him that feels like growth.” Grey’s story is the one piece Hawley singled out for active early-season planning, which is why the status quo statement matters more than a simple no-comment would.

Season 8 finale pressure

The Season 8 finale ended with Tim and Lucy abducted right after he proposed and she said yes, while Grey was left at a crossroads. Tim had also taken over Grey’s post as Watch Commander at LAPD’s Mid-Wilshire Station, so the finale left the chain of command unsettled even before Season 9 writers started mapping the next chapter.

Hawley said the show is in “very early stages” for Season 9, and that is the real point for anyone watching the cast closely: Grey is not being written out to solve the problem. The next move is to make his role feel like progress, not reset, and Hawley’s wording makes clear that Richard T. Jones remains part of that plan.
