Sam Kerr Reaches 64 as Chelsea Beat Leicester 3-1 — Champions League Table
Sam Kerr pushed Chelsea past Leicester 3-1 at the weekend and moved into the club lead on the champions league table race for next season with her 64th Women’s Super League goal. The striker’s opener gave Chelsea the result they needed to secure European football next season, while the milestone also pulled her beyond Fran Kirby’s long-standing total.
Sam Kerr and Leicester
Kerr struck first in the win, and that goal was the one that changed the record book. It took her to 64 Chelsea WSL goals, enough to move ahead of Kirby as the club’s all-time leading scorer in the competition.
She also extended a scoring run that had already reached three consecutive Women’s Super League games for the first time since May 2023. Since her debut in January 2020, only Bunny Shaw has managed a better goal rate in the league.
European football for Chelsea
The Leicester result did more than settle a record. It ensured Chelsea will play European football next season, which gives Sonia Bompastor a clear platform as she keeps reshaping the side after the end of the Emma Hayes era.
That rebuild is already moving around a changing core. Millie Bright is retired, and Guro Reiten left in January, leaving Kerr among the players carrying the attack through the transition.
Kerr, Shaw and Chelsea
Kerr finished with 86 overall goal contributions for Chelsea, while Bunny Shaw’s league benchmark sits at 81 goals and 99 overall goal contributions. The gap shows how quickly Kerr has climbed since January 2020, even after the 20 months she lost to an ACL injury and the summer uncertainty around her contract.
Her own words after the Leicester match matched the moment. “I'm absolutely honoured” she said in a selfie video, before adding: “it's been amazing to score 64 goals in front of all of you - let's finish off the season strong.”
Chelsea now have the record scorer they wanted and the European place they needed. For Kerr, the next test is keeping the run going while Bompastor builds the new version of the team around her.
