LeBron James Faces Okc Game History in Lakers-Thunder Game 1

LeBron James will make history in the okc game when the Los Angeles Lakers open their second-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder on May 5, 2026. The matchup arrives with the Lakers as 15.5-point underdogs, the largest spread James has ever faced if the line holds.

James and Doncic

James got the Lakers here by averaging 23.2 points, 8.3 assists and 7.2 rebounds per game against the Houston Rockets in the opening round. That production helped Los Angeles advance while shorthanded, but Game 1 will come without Luka Doncic, who the Lakers said will miss the opener.

Doncic was spotted shooting 3-pointers with teammates during Monday’s practice, a sign that he was around the group even though he will not play. For the Lakers, that leaves James carrying the heaviest load against a Thunder team that has already set the pace in the postseason.

Thunder Pressure

Oklahoma City swept the Phoenix Suns in the first round, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 33.8 points per game in that series. That combination has pushed the Thunder into the role of heavy favorite, with ’s matchup predictor giving them a 79.5% chance of winning Game 1.

JJ Redick added to the weight of the matchup by calling the Thunder one of the greatest teams ever in NBA history. He also compared their statistical profile to the 1995-96 Bulls, the 1996-97 Bulls and the 2015-17 Warriors, saying, “We saw a stat in our morning meeting, teams that have had back-to-back or even more than that, 10 or more better net ratings in consecutive seasons, you're talking about the '95-'96 Bulls and '96-'97 Bulls and the '15-'17 Warriors. You're literally talking about two of the greatest teams of all time,”

Redick went further before Game 1, saying, “I said to a bunch of people yesterday, off-site, talking about this series, to me, the Thunder is one of the greatest teams ever in NBA history. It's just the reality. They're that good. I think our guys recognize that and respect that, and we know what kind of task we have in front of us.” The Lakers now have to answer that task without Doncic and with a spread that makes Game 1 one of the steepest playoff assignments James has ever seen.

Game 1 Tipoff

Game 1 will tip off at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. If Los Angeles wants to turn the series, it has to do it immediately, because the opening number and Oklahoma City’s first-round form have already set the tone before the first possession.
