Matthew Lillard Joins Man of Tomorrow Cast Before 2027 Release

Matthew Lillard has joined the cast of Man of Tomorrow, James Gunn’s Superman sequel, as production continues on the film. The role has not been disclosed, which keeps the latest addition squarely about ensemble-building rather than plot reveal.

James Gunn Expands the Ensemble

Man of Tomorrow is already in production and scheduled to open in theaters on July 9, 2027. Gunn is keeping the story under wraps, but the cast list keeps growing around David Corenswet’s Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor.

The sequel will bring back Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. Lars Eidinger has been cast as Brainiac, while Adria Arjona will play Maxima.

Lillard After Daredevil: Born Again

Lillard recently appeared in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, giving the move an added TV-to-film crossover edge. For a production already carrying the weight of a Superman title that grossed over $600 million worldwide, adding another recognizable name suggests Gunn is still widening the film’s reach while keeping the central conflict closed off.

The setup also puts the sequel on a clean runway: a summer release for Supergirl, a premiere for Lanterns on August 16, and Clayface launching in October all feed the same DCU pipeline. For now, the only hard fact about Lillard’s role is the simplest one — he is in, and the film still has room to reveal what that means.
