Mamadou Sangare Draws Liverpool Interest After 3 Goals, 4 Assists — French League
Liverpool are considering a move for RC Lens midfielder Mamadou Sangare this summer, adding another name to a midfield market that is already unsettled in french league circles. The 23-year-old has put together a season that has pushed him into Liverpool’s orbit, with his output and contract status now part of the conversation.
Liverpool and Mamadou Sangare
Sangare has made three goals and four assists from central midfield this season, a return that has helped turn him into a possible target for Liverpool. He is under contract until 2030, so any deal would have to clear a long-term hold on a player Lens only brought in from Rapid Vienna for £6.9m last summer.
Liverpool are expected to compete for his signature. Dominic King described a player like Sangare as “essential” for the next phase of Arne Slot’s plans, and said Liverpool’s traditional close scrutiny of Ligue 1 means they will be aware of the well-regarded Mali international who plays for Lens.
Lens and the £35m price
Lens may not be pushed into a quick sale. A £35m package could be enough for the French club to consider selling Sangare, which sets the bar far above the fee they paid less than a year ago.
That figures neatly into Liverpool’s wider midfield planning. Slot has been relying on the same group for the last couple of seasons, while Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo all arrived in 2023. Gravenberch and Mac Allister are also said to be well short of their best form after Liverpool won the 2024/25 Premier League title, and Curtis Jones has a complicated contract situation.
Slot’s midfield rebuild
Sangare’s profile fits the same pattern Liverpool have used before: a midfielder with senior experience, room to grow and numbers that stand out from central areas. He came through the Red Bull system with Salzburg, had loan spells across Austria and Belgium, completed a permanent move to Rapid in 2024 and then moved on to Lens, where he has become a consistent presence.
For Liverpool, the practical next step is simple: decide whether Sangare is worth meeting a price that starts at £35m. For Lens, the decision runs the other way, with a 23-year-old under contract until 2030 already strong enough to attract attention from a club preparing for another midfield reshuffle.
