Edmundo Sosa Sparks Four-Run Eighth in Phillies’ 6-3 Win

Edmundo Sosa put the Phillies ahead with a bases-loaded single in the eighth inning, and they finished a 6-3 comeback over the Athletics on Wednesday night. The win pushed Philadelphia to three games under.500 after it entered play last Monday ten games under.500.

Sosa Delivers In The Eighth

The decisive swing came with the bases loaded, when Sosa lined a single that drove in two runs and turned a deficit into a lead. Philadelphia scored four runs in the inning, with Brandon Marsh adding an insurance RBI single while down 0-2 in the count and Justin Crawford following with an RBI groundout in his second at-bat off the bench.

That rally was built on pressure, not one blow. The Phillies needed every part of the inning after the Athletics had held the edge through the middle frames and forced Philadelphia to answer late.

Wheeler Works Into The Seventh

Zack Wheeler pitched into the seventh inning for the first time since his complete game shutout against the Cincinnati Reds on July 6, 2025. It was his third start back after thoracic outlet decompression surgery in September, and he allowed three runs on five hits while striking out four.

Wheeler’s line kept the game within reach even after the Athletics scored first. Jacob Wilson sent in Lawrence Butler with an excuse-me single in the third inning, Zack Gelof later scored on Nick Kurtz’s RBI single after a leadoff double in the fifth, and Tyler Soderstrom opened the sixth with a home run.

Phillies Keep Climbing

Brandon Marsh also gave Philadelphia a jolt in the fifth with his first triple of the year, a sharp turn that helped set up the late push. The Phillies had not won this year against a non-opener left-handed starter before this one, and the comeback finally cleared that hurdle.

The result sends Philadelphia into Thursday with a chance to complete the sweep. Andrew Painter is scheduled to start for the Phillies against J.T. Ginn for the Athletics.
