At least 14 retailers join Freiberg’s longer Saturday shopping
In freiberg, at least 14 retailers are joining a new monthly longer Saturday shopping push that begins on 9 May. The shops in the Innenstadt will open on every second Saturday of the month, with some staying open until 18 Uhr or 19 Uhr and all Advent Saturdays set for 18 Uhr.
Nicole Schimpke, Freibergs Citymanagerin, said the city hopes the uniform opening hours will pull more shops into the schedule. “Wir hoffen, dass sich möglichst viele Händler an den einheitlich längeren Öffnungszeiten am 2. Samstag im Monat beteiligen,” she said.
9 May starts the schedule
9 May is the first date on the calendar, and the city has already lined up 13 June, 11 July, 8 August, 12 September, 10 October, and 14 November. Schimpke said the aim is to make the shopping Saturday familiar to customers and worth the extra effort for retailers. “Dann kann sich der Einkaufssamstag in den Köpfen der Kunden etablieren und der zusätzliche Aufwand kann auch für die Händler zu einer lohnenden Investition werden,” she said.
At least 16 Uhr is the floor for the new hours, which gives shoppers a longer window than the usual Saturday afternoon rhythm in the Freiberger Innenstadt. Some participating stores are going further, staying open until 18 Uhr or 19 Uhr, and the city and trade association are using the launch to test whether a shared timetable can become a routine rather than a one-off event.
Freiberger Nachtschicht on 12 September
12 September carries a second draw with the 15. Freiberger Nachtschicht scheduled for the same date. That overlap gives the city a chance to bundle shopping with an established evening program, while the regular Saturday dates keep the initiative anchored in the calendar through the autumn.
Freiberg has rund 250 Anbieter, and the city is pitching short distances, personal advice, and a mix of known brands and individual offerings as part of the experience. The strongest version of this plan is the one Schimpke described plainly: “Wenn es gut läuft, planen wir den Einkaufssamstag dauerhaft anzubieten,” a line that turns the current trial into a test of whether Freiberg can lock in a permanent retail habit.
Advent Saturdays until 18 Uhr
In Advent, the shops will open on all Saturdays until 18 Uhr, which extends the same idea into the busiest shopping stretch of the year. For customers, that means the current monthly dates are not the end point; they are the bridge to a longer seasonal run that could decide whether Freiberg keeps the schedule beyond this year.
