Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver Exit Grey's Anatomy Bridge Over Troubled Water
grey's anatomy bridge over troubled water closes Season 22 on May 7 with Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver leaving the series after the finale. The episode pushes Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman out at the same time the hospital is hit with a bridge collapse near Seattle and dozens of critically injured patients.
May 7 at 10 p.m. ET
The finale airs Thursday, May 7 at 10 p.m. ET, and it carries a heavier exit load than a standard season end. McKidd has played Dr. Owen Hunt since Season 5, while Raver has played Dr. Teddy Altman since Season 6, giving the characters a combined 17 to 18 years inside Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Shonda Rhimes framed their departure bluntly in late March: "It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves." That line sets the business case for the episode too; the show is not just writing out two long-running regulars, it is doing it with the kind of farewell that can reset a core relationship before the next season begins.
Grey Sloan Under Pressure
A bridge collapses near Seattle in the episode, and dozens of critically injured patients flood into Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Owen was on the bridge when it collapsed, which puts his exit on the same emergency track as the disaster that drives the hour.
The previous episode ended with Teddy listening to a voicemail from Owen as the sound of the collision cut the message short, and promo footage shows Owen unconscious inside a car filling with water. Nick Marsh is brought into the ER in serious condition, and Meredith Grey appears alongside him in a scene that signals real danger.
Marinis and Luddington
Meg Marinis called the episode enormous by the production’s own standards, then added in a statement: "While their story is coming to a close, this is never truly a goodbye." Camilla Luddington said the cast were stunned reading the finale script at the table read, and she summed up the cliffhanger load this way: "It's not even just one cliffhanger. There's just so many cliffhangers in the finale. Like even as an actor, it's frustrating."
Grey's Anatomy has already been renewed for a 23rd season on ABC, so the real issue is not whether the series continues. It is how the show replaces the energy of two departures while Meredith Grey, who appeared in only seven episodes this season and spent most of Season 22 off-screen in Boston, remains in the mix for what comes after the finale.
