Jim Lenihan Takes Over Huddersfield Giants on Long-Term Deal

jim lenihan has taken over as Huddersfield Giants head coach on a long-term contract after Luke Robinson was sacked in March. The club are still at the bottom of Super League, and the move gives them a permanent appointment after weeks of change.

Huddersfield said Lenihan will link up with immediate effect, subject to visa clearances, and his first match in charge will be at home to St Helens on Thursday 14 May. That gives the 52-year-old a short runway to settle in before facing a side that has already been marked out on the fixture list.

Huddersfield Giants and Lenihan

Lenihan is not new to the club. He made 21 playing appearances for Huddersfield during the 1999 season, and he now returns after most recently working as head coach for the Brisbane Tigers in Australia.

The appointment also follows a spell of instability on the touchline. Robinson was dismissed on March 22 after Huddersfield lost all five of their opening Super League matches, and Liam Finn then took charge of five more league fixtures.

Visa clearance and timing

The club said Lenihan would join on a long-term contract, a sign that this is being treated as more than a short-term repair job. His coaching record adds to that reading: he was an assistant coach at Gold Coast Titans from 2019 to 2025 and briefly stepped in as interim head coach in 2023.

Huddersfield described the move as part of a new “Giants Unleashed” era, and the club said it had received strong applications before settling on Lenihan. The key practical point for supporters is straightforward: the next home game against St Helens is the first chance to see the new head coach in charge, provided the visa process is cleared in time.

St Helens at home

The timing leaves Huddersfield with little room to waste. They have moved from Robinson to Finn and now to Lenihan while sitting last in the table, and the immediate task is to turn a long-term appointment into points before the season moves further away from them.
