Heavy police activity at summit mall in Fairlawn, Ohio, on Friday followed unconfirmed reports of a possible shooting and left shoppers trying to get out or stay sheltered inside. Miller wrote, "I’m following reports of an active situation at Summit Mall in Akron. Some shoppers tell me they’ve been locked in a storage for at least 20 minutes as police respond." His report pointed to people inside the mall waiting while officers moved through the area.

Witnesses and local residents posted about a large police presence on social media. One witness wrote, "Avoid Summit Mall. Massive police presence due to a shooting. I’m trying to get out." Another wrote, "Shooting at summit mall! It’s closing. Trying to find gunman on the loose ! I’m out of here." One person said the whole mall was on lockdown because someone was shooting people inside.
