Heavy Police Response at Summit Mall Follows Shooting Reports
Heavy police activity at summit mall in Fairlawn, Ohio, on Friday followed unconfirmed reports of a possible shooting and left shoppers trying to get out or stay sheltered inside. Jordan Miller said some shoppers told him they had been locked in a storage area for at least 20 minutes as police responded.
Jordan Miller at Summit Mall
Miller wrote, "I’m following reports of an active situation at Summit Mall in Akron. Some shoppers tell me they’ve been locked in a storage for at least 20 minutes as police respond." His report pointed to people inside the mall waiting while officers moved through the area.
Witnesses and local residents posted about a large police presence on social media. One witness wrote, "Avoid Summit Mall. Massive police presence due to a shooting. I’m trying to get out." Another wrote, "Shooting at summit mall! It’s closing. Trying to find gunman on the loose ! I’m out of here." One person said the whole mall was on lockdown because someone was shooting people inside.
Herald Nation Reports
Herald Nation posted that no victims had been reported at that time, a suspect was reportedly in custody, and an Akron Police Department firearms K-9 unit was en route to assist. The same post said the mall was being closed while the investigation remained ongoing.
One person reported seeing about 22 police cars from Akron, Copley, Medina, Fairlawn, and sheriff's offices, along with undercover officers. That account matched the heavy response that spread across the area and drew attention from shoppers already inside the mall.
Fairlawn Police Activity
Authorities had not confirmed that a shooting occurred, and the social media reports about a suspect in custody were not independently verified in the material available. For people at Summit Mall, the practical change was immediate: access was disrupted, the mall was closing, and police activity dominated the scene while the investigation continued.
