Amos Yee assault at Suntec leaves 18-year-old arrested

Amos Yee said he was attacked at an anime convention at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre on May 9 and posted a picture of a bloodied lip. An 18-year-old was later arrested for causing public nuisance after the scuffle, according to the case details tied to the incident.

Suntec Singapore Convention Centre

Footage circulating online shows a man cosplaying as Yuji Itadori from the Jujutsu Kaisen anime approaching Yee on what appears to be the third floor of the convention centre. The video shows the cosplayer throwing several close-range punches toward Yee's face, then delivering hammer fists to his back as Yee bent over to shield himself.

The clip also shows Yee seated on the ground and covering up defensively. The cosplayer kicked toward his face and repeatedly stomped on his head, then briefly walked away with a companion before rushing back and tackling him to the ground.

Amos Yee on X

Yee later posted on X in the afternoon of May 9 that he had been attacked at an anime convention. He shared a photo of himself with what he described as a bloodied up lip, matching the visible injury in the circulating footage.

In the same time frame, he was heard exclaiming, “Oh, f*ck,” before being struck with several forceful elbow shots. A passer-by rushed toward the cosplayer and demanded that he “stop it”.

Doujin Market May 9

The event Yee was likely referring to was Doujin Market, held May 9 and 10 at the same venue. Organisers said in the early hours of May 9 that they were aware a “known problematic influencer” intended to attend and added, “He will not. We’ve cancelled his ticket and are working to ban him from all our shows”.

Screenshots had surfaced on X a day earlier apparently showing a Discord conversation in which Yee announced that he would attend Doujin Market. Yee later said he had been banned from the convention, while organisers described the event on their official page as “Singapore’s premier pop culture creators convention”.

The arrest gives the incident an immediate legal consequence, but the public record tied to the assault centers on the attack, the injury, and the removal of one attendee from the convention. For anyone at the venue, the practical point is that the confrontation ended with one person hurt and one teenager in police custody.
