Reece Lyon Rescues Queen Of The South Fc With Late 1-1 Draw

Reece Lyon rescued queen of the south fc with a stoppage-time finish at Palmerston, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 1-1 draw against Stenhousemuir in the first leg. The equalizer kept the play-off tie alive after Queen of the South had spent long spells on top but still needed a late reply to avoid leaving home with a defeat.

Palmerston Pressure

Queen of the South created their first opening inside a minute when Mikey Hewitt’s cross found Matty Douglas, but his header from 18 yards cleared the target. Jack Hannah then cushioned the ball back across goal and Douglas hooked over, before Liam Smith danced through the pack to set up Kai Kennedy for a stinging effort from the edge of the box that Darren Jamieson spilled behind.

Brennan Dickenson’s blocked shot fell to Hewitt, and the follow-up forced another smart save from Jamieson. Queens were also denied a penalty when referee Lloyd Wilson waved away loud appeals after Zander Mackenzie fired over while appearing to be caught by a defender.

Gregor Buchanan At 43 Minutes

Stenhousemuir took the lead on 43 minutes when Gregor Buchanan’s mis-hit shot deflected in a crowded box and wrong-footed Ross Stewart. The goal came against the run of a half in which Queen of the South had already produced five early set pieces and more of the attacking moments, but the visitors went into the break ahead anyway.

Peter Murphy responded after the interval by replacing Brennan Dickenson with Jack Stott after Dickenson suffered a head knock. Stott immediately pushed Jamieson into a superb diving save with a fierce strike from the edge of the box, while Ross Stewart later palmed away a Ross Taylor free-kick that looked bound for the net.

Reece Lyon Finishes Late

The final ten minutes brought more missed chances before Queen of the South finally found the gap. Clark dragged a shot wide from seven yards, and Ross Taylor fired wide in injury time with the goal at his mercy.

Then Smith delivered again. His pinpoint cross found Lyon, and the Queen of the South forward drilled a clinical finish into the bottom corner to make it 1-1 in the dying seconds. The draw leaves the first leg level and shifts the pressure to the second match, with neither side able to claim an advantage from Palmerston.
