Gwr set for 13 December nationalisation under Department for Transport plan
Great Western Railway, known as gwr, will be nationalised on 13 December, the Department for Transport set out. The change will make GWR the 11th train operator brought back into public ownership since Labour was elected in 2024.
For passengers on the line from Paddington station to west and south-west England and south Wales, the immediate shift is a transfer in control rather than a change in route map. GWR also runs services to Oxford and Hereford, and the date falls when new timetables around the country are set to take effect.
Paddington station and GWR routes
GWR has been in private hands for 30 years and is mainly run by First Group. It has worked closely with the Department for Transport in recent years on upgrades to the mainline and on introducing a new fleet of intercity trains.
The December transfer comes after legislation was immediately passed in 2024 to renationalise all passenger trains when contracts allowed. That process is expected to conclude by the end of 2027, and GWR’s move is one step in that timetable rather than the end of it.
Great British Railways in Derby
The government has already begun integrating the management of train operators and Network Rail where services have returned to public ownership. Great British Railways will be headquartered in Derby, and most daily rail operations will be devolved to regions.
After GWR changes hands, three other national rail operations will still be in private ownership next year: Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry and East Midlands Railway. Govia Thameslink Railway is due to be nationalised at the end of May, and Chiltern Railways will be nationalised in September this year.
The open question is whether GWR will immediately follow the Southeastern, South Western Railway and Anglia model in December, under which each had an overall managing director with responsibility for track and train. The Department for Transport has set the transfer date, but that operating structure has not yet been set out for GWR.
