President Woodrow Wilson then signed a presidential proclamation making Mother’s Day a national holiday, giving her campaign the official backing she had sought.
Jarvis did not frame the day as a generic sentiment exercise. In her writing, she said, “This is not a celebration of maudlin sentiment” and added, “It is one of practical benefit and patriotism, emphasizing the home as the highest inspiration of our individual and national lives.”

Jarvis later became severely disappointed with the holiday she had built. She believed Mother’s Day had devolved into a commercial holiday, with florists and greeting card companies benefiting more than mothers’ efforts and sacrifices.
