Fleetwood Moves One Shot Back at Quail Hollow
Tommy Fleetwood moved within one shot of the lead at quail hollow after a four-under 67 in the second round of the Truist Championship. Sungjae Im sits at nine under, leaving the weekend leaderboard tight with two rounds left in the no-cut event.
Fleetwood And Im At Quail Hollow
Fleetwood’s 67 put him alone in second place, one stroke behind Im after 36 holes. The English golfer had the round needed to stay in position, and the gap at the top is narrow enough to keep him in striking distance going into the final two rounds.
Im backed up his position with a two-under 69 and held the lead at nine under. That leaves Fleetwood with a clear target rather than a chase from behind, and it keeps the strongest move of the day aimed directly at the player in front of him.
McIlroy Joins The Chase
Rory McIlroy also posted a four-under 67 in the second round and reached five under at Quail Hollow in North Carolina. Rickie Fowler matched that total after an eight-under 63, which pulled him level with McIlroy at five under after 36 holes.
McIlroy’s second round came after Thursday opened with 17 consecutive pars, and the 67 was enough to keep him in the mix without matching the pace at the top. Fowler’s 63 was the day’s low number among the names in contention and brought him back into the same place on the board as the Masters champion.
Matt McCarty Fades Late
Matt McCarty, the first-round leader, followed his opening 63 with a 74 and was tied for eighth through 36 holes. Alex Fitzpatrick and Justin Thomas were seven under after the second round, another reminder that the no-cut format has kept a large group alive deep into the tournament.
The Truist Championship is the last event before the US PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania from 14-17 May, so the finish at Quail Hollow will shape the final tune-up for several players already sitting near the top of the board. Fleetwood has the best position among them now, with Im still one shot ahead and the lead still there to be taken.
