Sony Tells PS4 Owners to Get PS5 for Grand Theft Auto Vi
Sony Interactive Entertainment has started sending grand theft auto vi marketing emails to PS4 owners who wishlisted the game. The message points them toward a PS5 ahead of the November 19, 2026 launch, turning a game release into a hardware pitch.
Sony's PS5 Push
The email language is blunt: “Prepare for the launch of GTA6 on November 19, 2026, by getting a PS5.” It went to users who added the game to their wishlists but still only own a PS4, which makes the targeting unusually specific.
That audience matters because Sony is not casting a wide net here. It is going after people who already showed interest in the game and may need new hardware before they can play it on launch day. For PlayStation, that is the cleanest possible sales funnel.
Rockstar's PS5 Signal
Rockstar had already set the tone last year by using the phrase “Captured on PS5” in the second trailer for GTA6. Put next to Sony’s emails, the message is hard to miss: the game is being sold as part of the PS5 case, not just as a standalone title.
GTA6 will launch simultaneously on PS5 and XSX|S, but the current email push only nudges PS4 owners toward Sony’s console. The PC release date has not been confirmed, so the clearest path for wishlist users still sitting on a PS4 is a hardware upgrade before November 19, 2026.
Strauss Zelnick's Silence
Strauss Zelnick did not confirm or deny the partnership when asked in a interview. That leaves the emails as the strongest visible sign that Sony has begun marketing around the game, and analysts are reading them that way.
Take-Two is scheduled to announce fiscal year 2026 earnings on the 21st local time, and the second trailer arrived about nine days before last year’s earnings report. With a major summer marketing campaign already teased, the next hard marker for this rollout is how much more aggressively Sony and Take-Two choose to align their messages before launch.
