Luke Metcalf seeks Warriors release to explore 2025 options
Luke Metcalf has asked the Warriors for permission to explore his options for next season, a move that puts his future at the club in doubt. He has been pushed out of the starting side in recent weeks, with Tanah Boyd taking the halfback role and strengthening his own case after a contract extension.
Metcalf's No. 7 push
Metcalf met with the club to find out where he stands in the Warriors’ plans, and the discussion was not framed as a release demand. Dean Ritchie said on NRL360, “It wasn’t anything confrontational. It wasn’t we want a release it was more, where do you see Luke Metcalf in the club’s plans and where do they see Metcalf playing”.
Ritchie also said, “They aren’t talking walkout yet.” The issue is simpler and sharper than that. Metcalf prefers the No. 7 jersey, while the Warriors appear to view him more as a six, and that split has become harder to ignore as Boyd keeps the starting role.
Tanah Boyd's hold
Boyd has been impressive at halfback this season in Metcalf’s absence, and the Warriors are second on the ladder. That form has already been rewarded with a contract extension, which leaves Metcalf looking at a tighter path back into the side even though he recommitted to the club only last year.
The timing adds to the pressure around his spot. Metcalf signed a rich extension that runs until the end of 2028, but that deal does not begin until next season, so the current selection call is shaping his immediate future more than the contract on paper.
Warriors future call
Braith Anasta called the timing of the meeting odd, while Ritchie said, “I’m not saying his nose is out of joint but I am saying someone has taken his spot and he wants to find out what his future is at the club.” He also said, “The Warriors seem to think he could play six but I don’t think if you ask Luke Metcalf on the quiet if he wants to play six, he doesn’t, he wants to play seven.”
That is where this leaves the Warriors: a playmaker under contract through 2028, a halfback in Boyd who has earned his spot, and a move that should open the door for Metcalf to weigh options for next season. If the club gives him the green light, his next decision will be about role as much as destination.
