Mel Giedroyc Hosts The Way Out Across Four Escape Room Episodes
mel giedroyc is hosting The Way Out, a fast-paced comedy competition that lands on U&Dave HD and U from Tuesday 12 May 2026. The four-episode series drops six of the UK’s best comedians into escape rooms built around surreal set pieces, not a standard studio game.
Ed Gamble captains the Horrid Little Rat People with Chloe Petts and Lou Sanders, while Nish Kumar leads The Society of Best Friends with Amy Annette and David O’Doherty. Giedroyc said, “They’re all pals – it’s just adorable. Comedy is quite a small world, so everyone knows each other, but these are proper buds and it’s just beautiful. The vibe is great, the gags are platinum!”
Four episodes, four set pieces
Episode 1, Gone Fishing, puts the teams on an actual boat with sea mist, gulls and marine creatures before they head into a fish processing plant. Giedroyc described it as “an actual boat, it moves on ‘almost’ real sea – there’s a lot of fog and seagulls, there’s also fish being thrown out of the sea and onto the boat. Then, they go into a fish processing plant – when you see it, you’ll be absolutely hooked, excuse the pun!”
Episode 2, Art Heist, sends the teams into the Louvre to navigate lasers, lifts and ducts to nick the Mona Lisa. Episode 3, Shrink Machine, traps them in an oversized world where nothing is what it seems, and Episode 4 is called Fire Fighters. That run gives the series a format edge: each episode shifts the visual rules instead of repeating one escape-room setup.
Ed Gamble versus Nish Kumar
Giedroyc said Ed Gamble “literally becomes a different person in the escape room” and that he gets “quite focused,” with nostrils that “do a kind of flare-y thing.” Gamble said the contest carries extra pressure because it is a race against Nish’s team, and he has already done an escape room with Kumar.
Gamble said Kumar “did not care for it, and he wasn’t very good at it,” adding that if he loses to Nish, “I feel like I’m gonna have to retire from escape rooms and indeed life.” That line tells you where the competitive friction sits: the show is built on friendship, but the score still matters.
U&Dave HD and U lineup
The launch date on U&Dave HD and U puts The Way Out into a primetime-friendly comedy slot built around two recognizable team captains and four distinct episodes. CH 127 is part of the channel context around the launch, and the show’s friend-group chemistry is the commercial hook rather than any single stunt.
For viewers, the practical takeaway is simple: this is a fixed-run event with six comedians, four episodes, and a start date set for Tuesday 12 May 2026. If the format works, the escape-room premise could give the channel a repeatable comedy competition with more visual scale than a panel show and more structure than a one-off special.
