Cbse 12th Result 2026: CBSE sets 33% pass rule for Class 12

CBSE 12th result 2026 students now have a clear passing rule: the Central Board of Secondary Education requires 33% in theory and practical papers separately, along with an aggregate 33% across five subjects. Students who miss that minimum in one subject can fall into the compartment category even if they pass five of six subjects.

The board’s criteria also say students need at least 33% in every subject to qualify for the Senior School Certificate Examination. For subjects with practical work, failure in either part counts as failure in that subject.

CBSE passing marks rule

The board says students must secure 33% passing marks in both theory and practical subjects individually. It also sets the overall requirement at 33% with a minimum of 33% in five subjects for a pass. A student scoring more than 33% in one subject but missing the minimum in one of the five can still be placed in the compartment category.

That rule applies even when a student has six subjects and passes five of them under the theory-plus-practical formula. CBSE says the additional subject’s marks are counted in the passing calculation, so six-subject students do not get a separate escape route around the minimum.

Practical subjects and internal assessment

For subjects with practical examinations, CBSE requires a separate pass in both the theory paper and the practical paper. The board also says students must separately pass in theory, practical or internal assessment subjects.

In the 80-mark theory and 20-mark practical format, students need at least 26 marks in theory and 7 marks in practical assessment. In the 70-mark theory and 30-mark practical format, the minimums are 23 marks in theory and 10 marks in practical assessment.

Grade E and compartment

CBSE follows a grading system instead of absolute rank-based grading evaluation, and students who receive Grade E must appear for the compartment or supplementary exam. Students failing in one subject may take that compartment or supplementary exam conducted by the board.

For students waiting on the 2026 Class 12 results, the practical question is straightforward: the pass line is not just a total mark count. It is a subject-by-subject test, and one weak paper can still push a student into compartment even when the rest of the result is strong.
