Saurabh Dubey Makes IPL Debut as Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Kolkata Knight Riders vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru changed shape in Raipur on Wednesday when KKR handed Saurabh Dubey his IPL debut after Varun Chakaravarthy was ruled out with a niggle. The move came in a must-win match for Kolkata and pushed a new fast bowler into the middle of the pressure.
Saurabh Dubey Enters KKR XI
Ajinkya Rahane spelled out the change at the toss: "Varun Chakarvarthy misses out, with a niggle. Saurabh Dubey comes in," Rajat Patidar had won the toss for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and chose to bowl first at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium.
The delay before the start added to the disruption. A wet outfield after rain pushed the toss back by more than an hour, although no overs were lost.
Dubey’s Route To Raipur
Dubey is a left-arm medium-fast bowler from Vidarbha, stands 6'5" and had built a modest but varied resume before the call-up. He was India’s leading wicket-taker at the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in 2019, has 16 wickets in eight List-A matches for Vidarbha and has played 11 senior matches overall.
His recent path has been uneven. He had not featured in competitive cricket since a T20 game for Vidarbha in October 2023, though he impressed in the Vidarbha Pro T20 League last year for Orange Tigers. Sunrisers Hyderabad bought him in 2022, but injury stopped him before he played a match, and he later worked as a net bowler with Mumbai Indians.
KKR’s Pace Reshuffle
KKR signed Dubey as a replacement for injured India pacer Akash Deep after trials in Kolkata, and the decision now sits beside a pace group already thinned by Harshit Rana’s knee issue. The squad still carried Matheesha Pathirana, Blessing Muzarabani, Vaibhav Arora, Kartik Tyagi, Umran Malik and Cameron Green, but Wednesday’s change gave the attack a different look.
RCB made two changes of their own for the Raipur game. Jacob Duffy replaced Suyash Sharma and Romario Shepherd made way for Venkatesh Iyer, with Devdutt Padikkal listed among the Impact Player substitutes. For KKR, the immediate test is whether a debutant can absorb the workload in a match they needed to keep alive.
