Cloud Imperium Games Sets Star Citizen Alpha 4.8 for Next Week

Cloud Imperium Games said star citizen Alpha 4.8 will arrive next week with Tactical Strike Groups missions at the center of the patch. The update also brings a full wipe, which resets player progress instead of letting exploits and duping carry forward.

Tactical Strike Groups in Alpha 4.8

The new missions push teams into a large PvE raid against a Vanduul threat in space and on the ground. Players will have to fight or run away from a Vanduul Mauler capital ship, which turns the patch into a co-op run where preparation and coordination matter more than solo grinding.

Alpha 4.8 also adds repair, refuel, and rearm support for smaller ships tied to capital and sub-capital ships with a hangar if the required materials are on hand. Players with a Starfarer will be able to take part in refueling missions, and the Drake Caterpillar’s command module will become functional and able to detach from the ship.

DefenseCon and the free fly

DefenseCon will happen next week with a free fly event that lets everyone try the new features without paying. That same event will include the launch of the Drake Pitbull, the Origin M80, the MISC Starlite, the Aegis Tiburon, and the Drake Ironclad, giving players a short test window before the wipe reshapes inventories and progress.

The free fly timing matters because it lands beside the update, not after it. Anyone who wants to see whether Tactical Strike Groups fits their play style can do that before the reset, when the cost of experimentation is lowest.

Alpha 4.8.1 and 2026 plans

Cloud Imperium Games also laid out what follows Alpha 4.8, including Alpha 4.8.1 with additional defend locations, Alpha 4.8.2 with Alien Week celebrations, and Alpha 4.8.3 with Xenothreat returning. Chris Roberts is directing the project, and the studio says Squadron 42 is planned for 2026 while other 2026 work includes a reworked and instanced Siege of Orison, the rest of the Nyx system, new Starwear and Starchitecture features, new instanced operations, new ships and vehicles, and more gameplay and quality-of-life changes.

The open question is whether the wipe and the new mission structure will hold player attention long enough to bridge into those later patches. For now, the immediate decision is simple: play the free fly, or wait for the post-wipe economy to settle after Alpha 4.8 lands.
