Bill Axon says North Berwick pool stays safe despite green water

The swimming pool at north berwick Sports Centre has turned green after a failure in plant equipment, and Enjoy Leisure says the water remains very safe to use. Chief executive Bill Axon said the pool is regularly tested, while a repair to the equipment is due in the coming weeks.

Axon said: "Due to a breakdown in plant equipment affecting the component that aids water clarity, our highly trained pool-plant operators have continued, as always, to ensure the pool is maintained within industry guidance and parameters at all times." He added: "We want to reassure our visitors that the swimming pool water is regularly tested and remains very safe to use."

Enjoy Leisure and East Lothian Council

Enjoy Leisure runs sports centres in the county on behalf of East Lothian Council. The company said it carries out regular independent external testing to confirm water quality is maintained to a high standard, and that delays to fixing the equipment are linked to supply-chain difficulties.

The green appearance has been present in recent months, but the breakdown was tied to the part that aids water clarity rather than to a wider change in the pool's condition. Enjoy Leisure said highly trained pool-plant operators have kept the pool within industry guidance and parameters throughout, while the repair unit is due to be carried out in the coming weeks.
