EFL warns Southampton could miss League 1 Play Off Final

The league 1 play off final could still be reshaped after the English Football League said Southampton could be kicked out if they are found guilty of breaching regulations. The league also raised the possibility that the Wembley date may be delayed, putting supporters and clubs on notice before a Tuesday 19 May disciplinary hearing.

Southampton Face Tuesday 19 May

Southampton were charged over allegations that they spied on Middlesbrough’s training within 72 hours of the semi-final first leg, and for not acting with the utmost good faith. Before Southampton beat Middlesbrough in Tuesday’s second leg, the club said it had launched an internal review into the allegations of misconduct.

The independent disciplinary commission will hear the case by Tuesday 19 May, four days before the scheduled playoff final. The EFL said: “The commission will issue its decision as soon as possible following consideration of the relevant submissions and evidence.”

Wembley Fixture Under Pressure

Hull are already guaranteed a place in the Wembley final, but the opponent could still change depending on the outcome of the case. The league said supporters should be aware that the disciplinary proceedings may yet result in changes to the fixture.

That leaves the final vulnerable to short-notice disruption. The EFL said it has contingency plans if they are required, including consideration of any appeal process, if needed.

Travel Plans For Supporters

The league also told supporters to consider the situation when booking travel and accommodation. Hull and Southampton were due to share ticket sale information on Thursday, but the broader schedule now sits under the shadow of the hearing and any follow-up appeal.

Other Wembley events are already lined up around the same period, with the League Two playoff final on 25 May, the rugby league Challenge Cup final on 30 May and the women’s FA Cup final on 31 May. That leaves little flexibility if the disciplinary process changes the playoff final’s place on the calendar.
