Harry & Meghan Develop No Way Out Film for Netflix

harry & meghan are developing a feature-film adaptation of No Way Out for Netflix. The project turns Major Adam Jowett’s 2019 book into another scripted title inside their Archewell pipeline, with Matt Charman on the screenplay.

July 2006 in Helmand

No Way Out: The Searing True Story of Men Under Siege follows Easy Company, a unit of Paras and Royal Irish rangers tasked with holding a district in Helmand province in July 2006. That setting gives the adaptation a specific war-time frame rather than a broad military backdrop, and it ties the film to a campaign Harry knows from his own service history.

Matt Charman Writes for Netflix

Matt Charman is writing the adaptation as part of Netflix’s deal with Harry and Meghan’s Archewell. Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and Tracy Ryerson will produce, giving the project a team that already sits inside the couple’s scripted-film operation.

Prince Harry was deployed twice on active service in Afghanistan, including in Helmand Province, which gives this title a different weight from a generic war-property acquisition. Netflix’s earlier slate around the pair already included an adaptation of The Wedding Date, a version of Carley Fortune’s Meet Me At The Lake, and a polo-themed drama written by Francisca X. Hu.

Bajaria on the Deal

Bela Bajaria said earlier this year, “We still have a relationship with them. We have movies in development with them. We have an amazing doc with them. They have things in development on the TV and film side. Deals come and go all the time, and we don’t renew so many deals, those just don’t get as much press for obvious reasons. There’s no juicy story there.”

For Netflix, the film keeps Harry and Meghan in active scripted development rather than on a one-project track. For readers, the practical point is simple: this is no longer just a memoir on a shelf from Pan Macmillan in 2019, but a feature moving into adaptation with a writer, producers and a streaming home already attached.
