Manon Rheaume Takes Over PWHL Detroit as General Manager
manon rheaume was named general manager of PWHL Detroit on Friday, giving the expansion franchise its first top hockey executive. She will lead the club’s hockey operations as Detroit begins building toward its inaugural roster and the 2026 PWHL Draft.
Rheaume Returns To Detroit Hockey
The appointment brings Rhéaume back into a Detroit hockey role after she took part in the ceremonial puck drop during the league’s first game at Little Caesars Arena in March 2024. Detroit officially joined the league earlier this month, and the new franchise now has its lead decision-maker in place.
Jayna Hefford said Rhéaume is “a pioneer whose impact on the game extends far beyond the ice,” adding that she brings “an unmatched hockey resume, a championship mindset, and a lifelong commitment to growing the women’s game.” Hefford also said her experience and leadership make her “the perfect person to lead PWHL Detroit into its inaugural season.”
Hockey Resume Built Over Decades
Rhéaume arrives after four seasons in hockey operations with the Los Angeles Kings and an 11-year tenure with the Little Caesars AAA Hockey Club. At Little Caesars, she served as Girls’ Division Director and played a key role in player development and mentorship.
Her playing and international background is just as deep. Rhéaume became the first woman to sign a professional hockey contract, played in a 1992 pre-season game with the Tampa Bay Lightning, won two gold medals at the IIHF Women’s World Championship and earned silver at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano.
Detroit’s Inaugural Roster Clock
Rhéaume said, “I’m incredibly honoured and excited to join the PWHL and help build something special in Detroit,” and added that the city’s hockey tradition and passion are “truly special.” Her first job is to construct Detroit’s hockey operations department and start assembling the club’s inaugural roster.
The league’s expansion draft and player acquisition process are expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, with the 2026 PWHL Draft set for June 17 at Detroit’s Fox Theatre. Detroit, Las Vegas and Hamilton have expanded the league to 11 teams, and fans can put down deposits on season tickets as the franchise gets ready for its first season.
