Harvey Elliot on 109 minutes as Unai Emery calls Villa loan embarrassing

Harvey Elliot has played only 109 Premier League minutes for Aston Villa this season, and Unai Emery has now called the loan spell “embarrassing for everyone involved.” The midfielder has made four league appearances on loan from Liverpool, leaving Villa well short of the 10-game mark that would have triggered a £35m permanent move.

Emery on Elliott

Emery did not soften the verdict. “My apologies for Harvey Elliott are, every day, in my mind. We have our responsibility and Liverpool have their responsibility,” he said, before adding: “How the season has gone has been difficult.”

He also said: “To now explain about the reason for this decision is very difficult, or it is easy, but it is not the moment.” That is the clearest public sign yet that Villa see Elliott’s spell as a mismatch rather than a role they are trying to extend.

Villa’s January move

The timeline explains why the situation has become so awkward. Villa wanted Elliott back at Anfield in January, but Liverpool and Villa could not agree on a deal, and the season has since drifted into a run of minimal league minutes for a player who arrived on a season-long loan.

His only league start came in September against Fulham, and he was taken off at half-time. He has not played in the league since February. Across the season, Elliott has made four appearances in Europe for Villa, which is a very different level of involvement from the deal structure that was in place for the Premier League.

Premier League minutes at Villa

The loan carried a reported £35m obligation if Elliott reached 10 league games, so the current usage keeps Villa far from that threshold. For a player who has also won Euro 2025 with England Under-21s, scored five goals and was named player of the tournament, the club minutes tell a harsher story than the summer form did.

Elliott now has interest from clubs in the Premier League and Europe, and he is not expected to have a future at Liverpool while Arne Slot is in charge. Liverpool travel to Aston Villa on Friday, but Elliott is unable to play against his parent club, leaving the focus on where he goes next rather than where he can feature now.
