Max Fried lands on 15-day IL as Ny Yankees wait
The ny yankees placed Max Fried on the 15-day injured list because of a bone bruise in his left elbow, pushing one of their top starters out of the rotation for at least the minimum stay. Fried will be reevaluated in a few weeks, and the club will decide then when he can resume throwing.
Fried exited his most recent start after three innings on Wednesday, then was said to be dealing with posterior soreness in his left elbow. He said, “I do not think surgery will be necessary for my current issue,” after the injury became the club’s latest rotation problem.
Max Fried and Dr. Neal ElAttrache
Fried’s MRI will be reviewed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in the coming days. The Yankees did not mention structural damage or anything involving Fried’s ulnar collateral ligament, a notable detail for a pitcher coming off a three-inning start and now headed to the injured list.
The left-hander has worked 61 2/3 innings for the Yankees this season with a 3.21 ERA. He also has a 20.8% strikeout rate, a 7.9% walk rate and a 48.8% ground-ball rate, numbers that show how much production New York loses while he is out.
Gerrit Cole and the rotation
This is not an isolated setback. The Yankees still have not had both Fried and Gerrit Cole on the active roster at the same time since Fried signed his eight-year, $218 million contract in December 2024, and Cole is still working back from an elbow injury that shut him down in spring training 2025.
Fried’s absence leaves Cam Schlittler, Carlos Rodon, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers as rotation locks while he is on the injured list alongside Cole. Paul Blackburn, Ryan Yarbrough and prospect Elmer Rodriguez are the candidates to pick up innings, and Luis Gil remains on the minor league injured list after being optioned earlier this season because of right shoulder inflammation.
The next checkpoint comes after the reevaluation in a few weeks, when the Yankees decide whether Fried can start throwing again. Until then, they are managing another rotation opening around a pitcher they expected to anchor it.
New York rotation choices
For the Yankees, the practical effect is simple: they need innings now, and they have to find them without Fried while Cole is still unavailable. That turns Blackburn, Yarbrough and Rodriguez from depth pieces into real options while the club waits on the MRI review and the follow-up examination.
