Napoli Could Trigger £38m Rasmus Højlund Obligation Today
rasmus højlund could stop being a Manchester United player by the end of today if Napoli qualify for next season's Champions League. The deal that took him to Naples last summer includes a £38million conditional obligation to buy, and Napoli would have to sign him if they secure a place in UEFA's top competition.
Napoli at Stadio Olimpico
Napoli sit second in Serie A and are already assured of at least Europa League football next term, but their position still leaves room for a late change in Hojlund's status. A win over Pisa on Sunday evening would deliver Champions League football and push Napoli no worse than fourth, which would activate the permanent transfer.
The stakes are narrow and immediate. Napoli can still finish as low as sixth, with five points separating them from Como, so the final league position decides whether United's sale of Hojlund becomes their second summer transfer after Casemiro.
Giovanni Manna on Hojlund
Giovanni Manna, Napoli's sporting director, said earlier this month there are no doubts that Rasmus will stay there if the club have Champions League access. That statement followed the transfer agreement already in place, not a fresh negotiation.
Hojlund has scored 14 goals across all competitions for Napoli this season, but he has gone scoreless in his last six matches. He still supplied assists for Napoli's equalisers against Bologna and Parma, a reminder that his output has come in more than one form even during the dry spell.
Conte and the final push
Antonio Conte defended Hojlund from criticism over his lack of goals and pointed out that he is 23 years old. Napoli's manager has also had recent reason to value the striker's contribution, with the club winning just one of their last five matches after beating Milan in early April for a fifth consecutive win.
For United, the calculation is simple: if Napoli reach the Champions League, the £38million move becomes permanent and Hojlund leaves before the day is out. If Napoli slip, the striker stays on a conditional deal that now turns on one final result against Pisa.
