Xabi Alonso Liverpool Decision Puts Chelsea Offer in Play

Xabi Alonso Liverpool is at the center of a manager decision that could move quickly if Chelsea make their offer. The former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen coach is weighing whether to take the Chelsea job or wait for a future opening at Anfield, where there is no vacancy as things stand.

"Xabi Alonso has a big decision to make if he is offered the Chelsea job." Alonso’s preference has not shifted: "Alonso's dream job would be managing Liverpool" and he wants the Premier League route either way.

Chelsea shortlist pressure

Chelsea are working through about five or six names as they search for a permanent replacement for Liam Rosenior, who was let go after just four months in charge. The club has already made contact with representatives on the shortlist, but it wants time before making an appointment.

That leaves Alonso in a strong position inside the process. Chelsea want an experienced manager with a proven record of success at the highest level, and he is the outstanding candidate at the moment on that criteria.

Liverpool opening not there

The obstacle is simple: there is no vacancy at Liverpool right now, and Arne Slot looks set to stay. Alonso had been linked with the Liverpool job, but the current picture gives him no immediate route to Anfield.

Liverpool fans are becoming increasingly frustrated with Slot after a difficult and underwhelming season, yet Fenway Sports Group still backs him. That support narrows the path for Alonso, even with his long-standing preference for the Liverpool role.

Carragher on rival move

Jamie Carragher said, "I always felt Xabi would manage Liverpool at some stage. When you manage one of Liverpool's rivals, which Chelsea are, it makes it a little bit more difficult."

Chelsea are also considering Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola and Fulham head coach Marco Silva, while Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner, Como's Cesc Fabregas and ex-Flamengo boss Felipe Luis are also in the mix. For Alonso, the choice now is whether the Premier League move he wants should happen in London first, or whether waiting for Liverpool remains worth the risk.
