Damien Cook Dragons Contract Backflip Leaves Hooker Filthy Over 2027 Exit
Damien Cook said the damien cook dragons contract backflip left him filthy after the Dragons reversed course on a 2027 extension that had been close to done. The hooker had been days away from a one-year extension, but his NRL future at the club ended after the coaching shake-up and the club’s switch toward younger players.
Cook And The Dragons
Cook said he was involved in the decision and felt the strain of it. “Definitely in a way, because it obviously involved me,” he said, adding: “When you feel like you give so much to them, when those sorts of things happen, it can hurt a bit.”
He went further on the effect of the call. “I definitely respected the business side of the thing, but obviously because I was involved in it, emotionally invested in it, there were definitely a tough couple of weeks where I was filthy at the decision.”
The Dragons had paused all contract negotiations during a winless start to the season, then moved in a different direction after Shane Flanagan was sacked as coach. Dean Young took over as interim boss with a youth mantra, and Cook said recruitment told him they were on the lookout for a couple of younger hookers.
Ryan Carr And Castleford Tigers
That shift pushed the 34-year-old toward England. Cook signed a two year deal with the Castleford Tigers in Super League, where he will work under Ryan Carr, the former Dragons assistant and interim boss who reached out after the club decided to look elsewhere.
Cook said repeated talks did not change the outcome. “We asked a few times and sort of got the same response, so I had to let my manager know that we were going to have to look elsewhere and try and find something. Then next thing you know, Ryan Carr reached out.”
He had wanted to stay, but the Dragons’ call closed that door. “I obviously wanted to stay – you’d love to stay here. But the decision’s been made now and I’m actually really excited about it. I’m happy that the future’s been sorted and I can really rip in and do whatever I can to make sure this club finishes off the season well.”
Magic Round For Cook
Cook spoke ahead of his 250th NRL game against the Panthers in Magic Round, a milestone that now sits beside his final season in the NRL. His exit means the Dragons will not be part of the rest of his league career, and the move to Castleford sets the next step before he leaves Australia at season’s end.
For Dragons supporters, the line that changed everything was the reversal itself: a one-year extension was within reach, then the club backed away after the coaching change and recruitment shift. Cook is left finishing the season with a clear end point, and the club is moving with younger hookers at the front of its plan.
