Dustin Johnson Makes PGA Championship Weekend Amid LIV Uncertainty

Dustin Johnson made the 36-hole cut at the PGA Championship and will play the weekend in Newtown Square, Pa. The two-time major champion is back in the mix at a major after a surprise invite and a Friday par-70, while his future beyond this year remains unsettled.

Johnson Stays Alive At The PGA

Johnson, who was one of LIV Golf’s biggest early signings and is now 471st in the world, needed a clean Friday to keep his week going. He posted a par-70 and advanced into the weekend, with 20 PGA of America club pros and Luke Donald among the only players ranked below him in the field.

That placed a former No. 1-ranked player in a very unusual spot. He was one of 33 special invitations handed out this year, and the result gave him at least two more rounds at a major he entered outside the usual route.

Johnson On LIV Golf's Future

The bigger uncertainty sits beyond this tournament. The Public Investment Fund said it will no longer subsidize the LIV Golf League beyond 2026, and Johnson did not offer any certainty about where he will be next year.

“I think Scott’s doing a good job,” Johnson said when asked about LIV Golf’s future. On his own plans, he added, “I think your guess is as good as mine with what happens next year.”

Driver Limits Johnson's Game

After his Friday round, Johnson said he is happy with his game but that the driver has held him back. “I’m happy with my game, honestly,” he said, before adding, “Not very thrilled with my driver.”

He also pointed to the short game as a strength and said conditions around the greens are difficult at the PGA Championship. That leaves him with a weekend run at the season's second major and a cloud over what comes after next month’s U.S. Open, where he is exempt.
