Kelli Giddish Returns to SVU for Season 27 as Series Regular

Kelli Giddish is back on Law & Order: SVU as a series regular for season 27, restoring Amanda Rollins to NBC's long-running police drama after her departure in December 2022. The move arrives as the show heads into another season with a familiar face back in place and a finale set for Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.

“Sixteen years later, not only am I still on it, it's still going strong,” Giddish said of the series, which she joined in 2011. She also said, “The Dick Wolf Universe. When they form relationships with people, you have faith and trust that if there's a spot for you that opens up back in the family, they'll invite you back. And if it's right for your time, for your life, then you can take them up on it,” framing the return as part of a system built on long relationships, not one-off casting.

December 2022 to season 27

Giddish first left SVU in December 2022, then welcomed her youngest child, son Oldie, with husband Beau in June 2023. She said, “To leave and come back, it was kind of fortunate timing for me because I got to have my third baby, and for the first time I got to stay at home with my baby,” giving the return a personal timetable that lined up with the show’s needs.

She added that she came back once Oldie was a year old, which turns this into a clean handoff rather than a permanent exit. For the series, the benefit is immediate: a known character with a 2011 history returns just as season 27 is underway, and that gives the show continuity without having to sell a new role from scratch.

2011 and the Rollins role

Giddish joined SVU as Amanda Rollins in 2011, while Christopher Meloni had just exited as Elliot Stabler. She recalled, “I wasn't a big watcher of the show when I got the gig. All I knew was that Chris was leaving and so they needed a couple of actors to come in and kind of fill in around [that],” which puts her arrival inside a transition period for the franchise.

She was guest starring on The Good Wife when she signed on, then moved her life from Los Angeles to New York after joining the series. That kind of relocation is part of why a return like this lands as more than a guest spot; it reconnects an actor, a character, and a production base that have already been through the adjustment once before.

July starts season 28

Giddish also said she is “looking forward to next season already,” after describing her return as “like riding a bike” and praising the crew she has known for years. She said, “Their kids were this big when I started,” a reminder that the show’s behind-the-scenes continuity is part of the value here, not just the on-screen roster.

Season 28 is scheduled to resume shooting in July, so season 27 is not a one-off reset. The immediate takeaway for viewers is simple: Rollins is back in the regular cast, and the show is using its history as a working asset rather than treating it like archive material.
