Sam Ryder Extends Jesus Christ Superstar to 12 Weeks at Drury Lane

Sam Ryder will stay with Jesus Christ Superstar for a 12-week run at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, beginning on 16 October and ending on 9 January 2027. The move follows the production’s limited summer engagement at the London Palladium and gives the West End transfer a longer second life in a larger house.

Drury Lane dates set

The new season places Ryder back on stage as Jesus while the production shifts from the London Palladium to Theatre Royal Drury Lane. For audiences, the practical change is straightforward: the show now has a defined autumn-to-winter booking window, with tickets spanning the Christmas period and into the new year.

Michael Harrison said the production had already broken all-time box office records at the London Palladium, and that demand is now carrying it into another major West End theatre. “In light of this I am delighted to confirm that the production will follow its limited Palladium engagement with a further 12-week season at London’s other great iconic theatre, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, ensuring many more people have the opportunity to experience the extraordinary Sam Ryder in this legendary musical.”

Ryder and the returning cast

Ryder will not be the only returnee. Desmonda Cathabel will continue as Mary Magdalene, David Thaxton as Pontius Pilate, Bob Harms as Caiaphas, Matty J as Annas and Phil King as Peter. That keeps the production’s central ensemble intact as it moves venues, which usually helps preserve the balance of a show built on ensemble timing and vocal mix.

Michael Harrison also said, “I am also extremely proud that this is the first time a Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical will have played at the Lane.” That gives the transfer a separate industry marker beyond the run length: it puts one of the pair’s best-known titles into a theatre that has not hosted their work before.

What remains to be cast

Casting for Judas Iscariot, Simon and King Herod at Theatre Royal Drury Lane will be announced in due course, so the final shape of the ensemble is not yet complete. Ryder will also perform “Gethsemane” live on 16 May when he appears on Britain’s Got Talent from 6pm on ITV1, and a new recording of the song will be available on all streaming platforms from Saturday evening.

The clearest read from the transfer is simple: the Palladium run has already generated enough demand to justify a longer West End extension, and the Drury Lane booking turns that demand into a longer sales window for anyone who missed the summer engagement. For ticket buyers, the decision means there are now fresh dates to target rather than a one-theatre, one-season opportunity.
