Arsenal Emirates Stadium Redevelopment Talks Open With Populous

Arsenal are in talks with Populous over an arsenal emirates stadium redevelopment plan that could reshape the 60,000-seater Emirates Stadium. The discussions leave open two very different paths: major works that could force a temporary move away, or smaller hospitality upgrades aimed at lifting revenue.

Populous and Emirates Stadium

Populous designed the original Emirates Stadium, and Arsenal are back at the same firm as they weigh how best to expand a ground that opened 20 years ago. The architects also designed Wembley and Tottenham Hotspur's stadium, which opened in 2019 and holds 62,850.

Sources familiar with the process say all options remain on the table. That includes a full redevelopment as well as more limited work inside the stadium.

Otto Maly and Arsenal

Otto Maly is one of the key figures in the boardroom reshuffle behind the discussion. He joined Arsenal's board reshuffle last September, is president and director of special projects at Arsenal owner Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, and was a key figure behind the construction of the 70,240-seater SoFi Stadium.

His background points to the scale of thinking now around the Emirates. Arsenal have the choice between disruption and a narrower upgrade, and the numbers around London make the issue harder to ignore.

Premier League Stadium Pressure

West Ham moved into the 62,500-seater London Stadium, and upgrades to Liverpool's Anfield have edged it ahead of the Emirates in size. Arsenal's 60,000-seat ground no longer sits alone near the top end of the Premier League picture, which is why the club is examining whether to add capacity, revenue, or both.

The immediate practical issue is simple for supporters: a major rebuild could mean leaving the Emirates for a period, while a smaller hospitality project would keep the club in place. Either way, Arsenal's next move will determine whether the Emirates stays as it is or becomes a different kind of home.
