Erin Nuwer Leads Tennessee Softball Past Northern Kentucky 3-1
Tennessee softball opened the 2026 NCAA Tournament with a 3-1 win over Northern Kentucky on Friday evening, and Erin Nuwer handled the whole game in the circle. She allowed one hit, no earned runs and struck out seven, giving Tennessee the cleanest path through the Knoxville Regional opener.
Nuwer Holds Northern Kentucky Down
Nuwer started and finished the game, and Tennessee did not need to turn to Karlyn Pickens or Sage Mardjetko. That extra day of rest came from a full-game effort that left Northern Kentucky with only one hit and no earned runs against the Tennessee starter.
Tennessee struck first in the second inning when Emma Clarke sent a solo home run to center field. Northern Kentucky later tied it in the top of the sixth, putting the game back in the balance before Tennessee answered in the bottom half of the inning.
Clarke, Morrison, Leach Deliver
Elsa Morrison put Tennessee back on top with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. Gabby Leach followed with a double for an insurance run, turning a one-run game into the final 3-1 margin.
The offense did not stay clean throughout. Tennessee stranded nine runners, went 2-for-13 with runners on base and finished 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position, numbers that show how narrow the gap was even in a win.
Knoxville Regional Pressure
The game was played in the two-loss elimination bracket of the Knoxville Regional, so Tennessee had to protect its tournament life from the start. The win keeps the three-headed pitching group of Nuwer, Pickens and Mardjetko in position to keep working as the bracket moves on, with Tennessee also in line to face Virginia or Indiana next.
