Clay Holmes breaks fibula in Yankees - Mets 5-2 opener

The Yankees beat the Mets 5-2 in yankees - mets Game 1 at Citi Field, but the night swung wider when Clay Holmes left with a fractured fibula after a 111-mph comebacker hit his leg. The Mets starter was expected to be sidelined for a long time, turning a rivalry opener into a much bigger problem for New York’s rotation.

Schlittler holds the Mets down

Cam Schlittler gave the Yankees the edge they needed, allowing one run in 6 2/3 innings. Juan Soto accounted for the Mets’ only run against him with a home run, but the Yankees kept building after that and finished with a 5-2 win.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. did most of the damage for the Yankees offense. He had a three-hit effort, drew a walk, stole a base and reached base four times for only the second time this season, helping produce three of New York’s five runs before being picked off at first base to end his night.

Holmes leaves with injury

Holmes had been pitching in his second season back as a starter and had not allowed more than two runs in any start before Friday night. The line drive that struck him came off the bat at 111-mph, and the fracture removed one of the Mets’ best arms from the series and from a rotation plan that had him trending like an All-Star.

Carlos Mendoza said Holmes would be out for “a long time.” That leaves the Mets sorting through a pitcher's spot that had been scheduled to be one of the night’s centerpieces and was instead forced into damage control after the injury.

Rodón and Brazobán lined up

Saturday’s Game 2 was set to bring Carlos Rodón to the mound for his second start of the season for the Yankees. The Mets planned to open with Huascar Brazobán before David Peterson likely handled the bulk innings, a setup that put the injury fallout and the series scoreline at the center of the next matchup.

New York already had the first win, and the Mets had already lost more than a game. Holmes had been set up to opt out of the $12 million left on his 2027 deal, but the fracture changed the immediate picture far more than any contract layer could. The series moved on with the Yankees carrying the 5-2 result and the Mets forced to fill a major gap on the mound.
