Jazz Chisholm Jr. Posts 3 Hits in Yankees’ 5-2 Win
Jazz Chisholm Jr. went 3-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs in the Yankees’ 5-2 win over the Mets on Friday night at Citi Field. He reached base four times, his second such game this season, and ended the night by getting picked off at first base.
Chisholm’s baggy pants streak
Chisholm borrowed Giancarlo Stanton’s baggy pants before the game because he could not find Trent Grisham’s pair. He had worn Grisham’s pants earlier this season in Houston and went 5-for-12 across three games, then stayed with the same idea on Wednesday when he wore the baggy pants that Grisham uses on occasion and had the Yankees’ only hit, a double.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. and the Yankees lineup
The production stood out because Chisholm entered Friday batting.203 with a.607 OPS through 43 games. For a hitter viewed as the hinge to the bottom half of the Yankees’ lineup, that kind of night gives the club more ways to score when the order turns over.
The Yankees also came off a one-hit game on Wednesday and produced 10 hits against the Mets, with Chisholm’s bat driving a larger push than the box score had shown only two days earlier. Cam Schlittler backed him by saying, “Jazz is the guy” and, “Regardless of the start of the season, he’s a great player. It’s good to see him go out there and get a few knocks.”
Friday night at Citi Field
Chisholm also drew a walk and stole a base against the Mets, then said, “It’s something about the baggy pants,” after the win. He added, “We marked those No. 13” and “They ain’t his pants no more.”
He finished by saying, “I’m just going to keep the same mindset of trying to go out there and win and not worry about what I’m doing.” That leaves the Yankees with a clearer sign that one productive night from the middle of the lineup can change the feel of an offense that had been stuck around him for much of the season.
