Saprissa tops Liberia 3-1 and sets Herediano - Saprissa final

Saprissa advanced to the final of the second phase of the Clausura after beating Liberia 3-1 on aggregate, and herediano - saprissa is now set for Wednesday. The win sent the club into a matchup with Herediano after a tie that ended Liberia’s long unbeaten run.

Medford Defends Saprissa

Hernán Medford called the qualification fair and said his team applied itself very well tactically. He said Saprissa won with merit and praised the players for handling the moment against a side that had been in good form.

Medford also pointed to Madriz, saying the goalkeeper has the stature of a national-team player and could go play abroad. He said the club can keep competing because everyone is responding well despite some absences, a point that gives Saprissa a broader bench heading into the final.

“Me preguntan por él, pero acá felicitó a todos, cada uno hace su trabajo. Madriz tiene estampa de portero de selección, de poder ir a jugar afuera, ya lo había dicho anteriormente. Se demostró que acá cualquiera puede jugar, todos están respondiendo bien ante algunas bajas, por ese lado estoy contento y tranquilo, se ratifica que aquí hay equipo,” he said.

Herediano Awaits Wednesday

The final brings Saprissa straight into another high-stakes meeting with Herediano, and Medford framed it as a clash between two teams with players who know how to win titles. He also said he respects Herediano always, while rejecting questions tied to earlier remarks after Saprissa’s 2-1 home win over Herediano in the regular season.
