George Chases $7.50 Double at Doomben and Suncorp — Nrl Live
Cameron George is chasing a $7.50 sporting double in nrl live, with the Warriors chief executive at Doomben today to watch Dream Roca in the A$300,000 Spirit Of Boom Classic before the One New Zealand Warriors play the Brisbane Broncos tomorrow. The filly is the $4.60 second favourite, while the Broncos are priced at $1.65 to beat the Warriors at Suncorp Stadium.
Dream Roca and Doomben
Dream Roca will jump from barrier 1 with Ben Thompson aboard, and only Vantorix is shorter in the market. That makes George’s weekend overlap unusually tight: one race meeting in Brisbane today, then Magic Round’s biggest game tomorrow against the reigning premiers.
George’s link to racing goes well beyond a casual punt. He worked as a stipendiary steward, moved to New Zealand from Australia through that role, and later became chief executive of the Auckland Racing Club. He was also trackside in January when Dream Roca returned home to win the $1 million Karaka Millions at Ellerslie.
George and Stacey Jones
The Warriors boss has already had success on both sides of the code divide. Last September, he and coach Stacey Jones co-owned Quintessa, which won the first Group 1 race of the New Zealand season, and that association is part of why this Brisbane weekend carries more weight than a simple race-day visit.
Dream Roca was bred in New Zealand, sold to Queensland trainer Liam Birchley at the Karaka yearling sales, and now gets its Group 2 test in front of a rain-affected track after a wet week in Brisbane. The horse’s path from Karaka to Queensland has already produced a $1 million win, and the market has kept it close enough to make George’s double more than a long shot.
Broncos at Suncorp Stadium
The other half of the weekend arrives tomorrow, when the Warriors face the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium. James McDonald rides Vantorix in the same Doomben card, but George’s attention sits on Dream Roca first and the Broncos second, with the bookies giving him a $7.50 chance of landing both ends of the trip.
If Dream Roca delivers in the Spirit Of Boom Classic, George goes into Sunday with momentum already on his side. If the Broncos win as the $1.65 favourite, the weekend still leaves him with a racing pointer he can measure against one of the NRL’s biggest fixtures in Brisbane.
