Pep Guardiola Names Luke Shaw One Of His Favourite Players

Pep Guardiola singled out luke shaw as one of his favourite players while speaking at the FA Youth Cup final at the Joie Stadium. The praise lands after a season in which Shaw has gone from limited availability to starting all 36 of Manchester United's Premier League games.

Guardiola's United Praise

Guardiola said he had seen top class players from United, including Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Michael Carrick. He added that Shaw was “one of my favourite players,” a striking line from the Manchester City manager given the rivalry between the clubs.

He also said: “United always plays really good” and added, “Happy to see, in the stands, Omar [Berrada], Jason Wilcox – the most important part in this club for the last decade, both of them.” The comments came with Shaw, Fernandes and Mount present at the Joie Stadium, where United lost 2-1.

Shaw's 36-Game Run

Shaw's season has reset the view of his United career. He played only 27 games across the two seasons before this one, then started every league match this campaign under a team structure that shifted from Ruben Amorim's 3-4-2-1 to a back four after Michael Carrick's appointment.

That revival sits against a longer injury history. Over 10 years ago, Shaw suffered a serious leg break against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, and injuries have followed him through much of his career since then. This year, though, he has held down a regular place in a side that has been planning changes on the left side of the squad.

Manchester United's Left Side

United are looking to revamp their left-hand side this summer, with both a left-back and a left-winger on the agenda. Shaw's contract is set to expire in 2027, so his current run of starts arrives at a time when the club is still weighing how the position should look next season and beyond.

For Shaw, the public praise from a rival manager matters because it matches the season he has put together. After two injury-hit years and a career once shaped by that leg break at PSV Eindhoven, he is back playing every week, and Guardiola has now put his name next to the best players he watched at the Joie Stadium.
