Schauffele Fowler Pga Championship Pairing Sparks 4-Under Saturday Run
Xander Schauffele turned his schauffele fowler pga championship pairing into a 4-under third round on Saturday, saying it was “awesome” to play alongside Rickie Fowler. The round lifted Schauffele to 3-under for the major and kept him two shots behind leader Alex Smalley.
Schauffele Fowler pairing
“I mean, on Saturday you're just chasing,” Schauffele said after the round. He said Fowler “plays really fast and very positive” and added, “It was awesome playing Rickie. He plays really fast and very positive. Just gotten to know him a little bit better in Jupiter, so incredible pairing there on a Saturday.”
Fowler did not make a bogey. Schauffele said the former major winner made two birdies and all pars, which kept the group moving at a sharp pace through the round.
Aronimink pin locations
Schauffele said the first two rounds at Aronimink were “tricky or quirky” and required discipline. He also said the pin locations the first two days were “pretty diabolical,” and added that some of them were “pretty gnarly.”
He said Saturday looked cleaner because he hit better tee shots and better iron shots. “The putter kind of kept me in it yesterday and the first day, so really leaned on the flat stick to keep me alive, I'd say,” he said, after bouncing back from Friday's 73.
Schauffele stays in touch
Schauffele said he was “happy to make a birdie and limp in in that fashion” on Friday night, then built on it with a better ball-striking day Saturday. He finished 1-under for the major and said, “It was just sort of nice to attach some better shots so I could have some more looks at birdie versus par.”
The leaderboard remained bunched, and Schauffele’s 4-under round left him in the middle of the chase rather than out of it. The 2024 PGA Championship winner said he was “definitely, nice to be back in touch in a major.”
