Tornado Warning Nebraska: Hebron emergency covers 1,700 residents
A tornado warning nebraska emergency was declared for Hebron, Nebraska, and surrounding areas Sunday night as severe storms and tornadoes hammered parts of the Plains. The National Weather Service said about 1,700 residents were covered by the emergency while a large tornado was very likely impacting the town.
So far, reports of serious damage from the late-night emergency had not materialized in Hebron. The declaration came as part of a broader severe weather outbreak that was expected to peak Monday in the Central Plains and mid-Mississippi Valley.
Hebron emergency declaration
The National Weather Service issued the emergency for Hebron and surrounding areas after warning that a large tornado was likely hitting the town at the time of the report. The alert covered some 1,700 residents, putting the focus on a small population center caught inside a fast-moving storm system.
That same storm pattern was tied to supercell thunderstorms developing in unstable, moist air ahead of a cold front. The threat was expected to peak around sunset through midnight, with a level 2 of 3 tornado threat and the possibility of EF3 and stronger tornadoes in the forecast area.
Palmer tornado damage
About an hour before the report on Hebron, a huge tornado struck near Palmer, Nebraska. Storm chaser Jaden Pappenheim and storm chaser Sarah Kassabian were on the scene in central Nebraska as the tornado was in progress.
Kassabian documented the tornado minutes before the report, and storm chasers later reported severe damage to structures near Palmer. Two people were rescued from the rubble of a home, and there were no confirmed deaths in Palmer.
Plains severe weather risk
The Nebraska emergency sat inside a wider outbreak that also brought damage to outbuildings on a farm near Tripp, South Dakota, and flipped a camper. Damage to barns was also reported near the Wisconsin towns of Hayton and Chilton.
More than half a million people in parts of northern Iowa and southern Minnesota faced a tornado threat until 1 a.m. CDT, with strong tornadoes possible in those areas. For residents in Hebron, the immediate priority is to stay in shelter as the storm threat continues to shift east and the broader outbreak remains active into Monday.
