Kacey Montoya appears on Good Day LA after KTLA firing — Ktla

Kacey Montoya appeared on Fox 11’s Good Day LA on Thursday to discuss Fix’n Fidos after being among the ktla talent fired earlier this year. The former KTLA weathercaster used the segment to explain how her nonprofit helps animals, pet owners and veterans with pets.

Kacey Montoya and Fix’n Fidos

Montoya said she found the motivation to start Fix’n Fidos in 2018 because of overcrowded animal shelters. The nonprofit became official in 2019 and focuses on keeping animals out of shelters, including spay and neutering services and help with unexpected vet costs.

She also said she works to help veterans with pets. On air, she pointed to overcrowded shelters and illegal breeding and said, “Hopefully this election cycle we get people who care about pets and will fix it,”

KTLA layoffs and Montoya

Montoya had her last day on air for KTLA last month after appearing regularly on weekends following the February announcement that she was among some of the station’s top talent to be fired. Ellina Abovian, Glen Walker, Lu Parker and longtime meteorologist Mark Kriski were also let go.

Montoya posted on Instagram after her final day on air, “I am truly grateful for the experience,”

Araksya Karapetyan in Portland

Montoya said she had worked with Good Day LA anchor Araksya Karapetyan 20 years ago in Portland, Oregon. The appearance gave her a fresh public platform in Los Angeles just after her departure from KTLA, while keeping the focus on the nonprofit she built from that 2018 motivation.

The layoffs were reportedly fueled by parent media company Nexstar Media Group as it looked to finalize its acquisition of Virginia-based media company Tegna. One staffer still employed at KTLA told The California Post the situation had left them feeling “sick” and compared it to “having five friends die.”
