Hutchesons' Grammar School unveils £1m campus plan at Beaton Road
Hutchesons' grammar school has unveiled plans for a £1m campus project in Glasgow's south side, bringing its primary and secondary schools together at Beaton Road in Pollokshaws. Mark Ronan said the co-location project will create a unified, seamless campus for excellence.
The school said the work is being paid for partly through the sale of its primary building on nearby Kingarth Street and its tennis courts in Darnley Gardens. It expects the project to be completed by August next year, with construction staged in holiday periods so the school can stay open.

Ronan, the rector of Hutchesons’ Grammar, said the change will create a continuous educational journey from P1 to S6. He also said the reinvestment in a single-site campus will enhance specialist provision in science, art, drama, music and sport for primary pupils.
“The co-location project signals that Hutchesons’ Grammar School is investing for the future,” he said.
“The reinvestment in a single-site campus means that all pupils will benefit from excellent facilities and learning environments, as well as enhancing specialist provision in science, art, drama, music and sport for primary pupils.”
Holiday work at Hutchesons'
The school completed its first phase of construction during the half-term break last February. That phase delivered four redeveloped classrooms and a main corridor upgrade.
Work planned for the summer holiday period includes a lower school area, an outdoor play area and a wellbeing hub. The outdoor play area is planned to feature timber trails, biodiversity areas and social seating for pupils from Primary 1 to S6, while the wellbeing hub will be made up of four bases at the heart of the campus.
VAT and co-location
Hutchesons' said the VAT on school fees imposed at the start of last year hastened the co-location plans. The school said it is one of only a few independent schools in Scotland investing significantly in physical infrastructure after the tax change.
The project gives the school a single-site campus while keeping classes running during construction, and it ties the next stage of work to school holidays rather than term time. For families across Primary 1 to S6, the practical change is a move toward one campus rather than two separate schools.
