Guardiola Says City Must Beat Bournemouth or Title Chase Ends
Pep Guardiola has made Tuesday’s visit to Bournemouth plain: Manchester City must win or their Premier League title chase is over. The City manager said the only route left is to beat Bournemouth, end a 17-match unbeaten run and keep pace in a race that still depends on results elsewhere.
Guardiola and Bournemouth
Guardiola put the pressure on his own team without softening it. “La única opción que tenemos de ganar la liga es ganar ese partido. Tenemos que acabar con la racha del Bournemouth, de lo contrario nuestra carrera por el título se acabará,” he said before the match.
He also framed the target in simple terms. “Es importante llegar con opciones al final. Lo único que queremos es llegar al último día, con nuestra gente, con opciones de pelear,” Guardiola said, with Manchester City still needing to navigate Bournemouth and Aston Villa while hoping Arsenal drop points.
Manchester City’s remaining route
City’s situation is tighter than a one-game test. Guardiola said the club still need to beat Bournemouth and Aston Villa, then rely on Arsenal losing points against Burnley or Crystal Palace to win the Premier League. The final league match for City is against Villa, which leaves no margin for a slip in Tuesday’s trip.
That backdrop is sharper because City won their twentieth title under Guardiola three days before the Bournemouth match, then turned straight back to the league chase. Guardiola said the turnaround has been short: City had three days of rest after the FA Cup final, while Bournemouth had 10 days to prepare.
City, Bournemouth and the run
Guardiola pointed to Bournemouth’s form as the barrier City have to clear. Bournemouth are on a 17-match unbeaten run and are also chasing a place in the Champions League, which gives the match a second layer of pressure for the hosts.
He also flagged how last season’s meetings split in different ways. Manchester City had one of their worst Premier League performances against Bournemouth, but they played well against Iraola’s side in the FA Cup quarter-finals. City also won their twentieth title under Guardiola three days before this meeting, leaving the league race and the cup celebration on the same tight schedule.
Guardiola said the workload was limited before the trip. “No entrenamos mucho, necesitamos reservar energías para mañana,” he said, a sign that City are managing the short turnaround as they try to keep the title race alive for one more week.
