Douglas Santos Earns Brazil's 26-Man 2026 World Cup Squad Place
douglas santos is in Brazil's 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup after Carlo Ancelotti named the left-back in his latest selection. The call-up puts the 31-year-old back on the game’s biggest stage after years built more on club trophies than constant Brazil minutes.
Ancelotti's left-back choice
Santos, born in João Pessoa, Paraíba, on 26 March 1994, has five appearances for Brazil and no goals. He is listed as a left-back, stands 1.76m and weighs 74 kilos, and now competes with Alex Sandro for the starting role in the tournament.
That competition matters because Brazil did not pick him for novelty. He started in the 3-0 win over Chile in the latest World Cup qualifying matches, and he also started in the friendly wins over South Korea and Croatia, plus the loss to France. He did not play in Brazil's loss to Bolivia in the same qualifying window.
From CSP to Zenit
Santos began professionally at CSP and moved to Náutico while still in the youth ranks. Felipão called him up in 2013 for a friendly against Bolivia, and his first major Brazil run came in 2016 while he was at Atlético-MG.
He entered the win over Panama in May 2016, then started all six matches of Brazil's gold-medal run at the Rio 2016 Olympics. In that tournament, he also delivered two assists in the 4-0 win over Denmark. He was later included in Dunga's squad for the Copa América Centenário in the United States.
Russia brought the trophies
After Atlético-MG, Santos moved to Hamburg and stayed in Germany from the 2016/17 season until the end of 2018/19. He then signed for Zenit, where the return has been fuller and longer: six Russian league titles in seven seasons, with Krasnodar breaking that run in 2024/25, plus two Russian Cup titles and five Russian Super Cup titles.
His club form still comes with a small warning label. He has 24 matches and one goal in the current season, and his Zenit contract runs until June of next year. Brazil’s staff still chose him anyway, which keeps the left side of the squad open to a direct battle and gives Santos another chance to turn a thin international record into a larger role in 2026.
