Police investigate Sceggs pipe bomb allegation in Darlinghurst

Police have launched an investigation at sceggs in Darlinghurst after a Year 7 student allegedly asked for instructions on how to make a pipe bomb in a WhatsApp group chat on Sunday afternoon. The messages were reported to the school, which immediately contacted police because of the serious nature of the content.

SCEGGS Darlinghurst

According to the school, the allegation involved a group of Year 7 students at one of Sydney’s most exclusive private schools. 7NEWS understands the girl allegedly told the group she had already acquired some ingredients to make the pipe bomb.

Police at the school

Detectives attended the school and searched a locker as part of their investigation. Officers also spoke with a child on campus and carried out additional inquiries off campus.

Discipline and inquiry

The school has already taken disciplinary action against some of the students involved in the incident. The police investigation remains ongoing, leaving the school and the families involved to deal with both the internal response and the criminal inquiry at the same time.

For parents at SCEGGS, the immediate issue is not the allegation alone but the fact that police have already been on campus, searched property and spoken with a child. That is the point at which a school disciplinary matter became a police case.
